<p>Last week, our colleague Siem Delfos, Commercial Manager and Offshore Specialist at Hacon Containers, travelled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to attend OTC Asia 2026. This leading offshore and energy exhibition once again provided an inspiring platform for innovation, networking, and business development.</p>
<h2>Small-scale, yet powerful</h2>
<p>According to Siem, OTC Asia is a relatively compact and well-organized exhibition, contributing to its accessibility and dynamic atmosphere. At the same time, its open nature—without an entrance fee—attracts a wide variety of visitors. While this can make it busy, it also creates unexpected opportunities for new connections and insights.</p>
<h2>Innovations with potential for containers</h2>
<p>During his visit, Siem came across various innovative solutions and technologies that could become relevant to the container industry in the future. Some of these developments could even be directly integrated into, or built within, container solutions.</p>
<p>“There are interesting companies working on solutions that perfectly align with what we can achieve with containers,” says Siem. “A collaboration with Hacon Container Modifications could significantly strengthen the development of these solutions.”</p>
<h2>New leads in the offshore market</h2>
<p>In addition to exploring innovations, Siem spoke with several companies active in the offshore sector that already use containers, both onshore and offshore. Notably, many of these companies are not yet fully aware of the full range of possibilities Hacon offers.</p>
<p>According to Siem, this presents a clear opportunity: “There are companies already working with containers but not yet aware of how broad the applications really are. In the coming period, I will actively engage with these companies to explore where we can add value.”</p>
<h2>Networking remains essential</h2>
<p>As with any exhibition, networking played a key role. Alongside scheduled meetings, there was plenty of room for spontaneous encounters—often the moments where the most interesting conversations take place. Siem also reconnected with existing relations and familiar faces, highlighting Hacon’s growing network in the international market.</p>

Sarah, who together with her colleagues Ferry, Marko, and Camillah is responsible for the rental branch, explains that you are involved in the entire process: from request to delivery. It’s exactly this speed and variety that make the job interesting and keep you sharp: you’re constantly switching, planning, and thinking along.</p>
<p>This variety is not only experienced in the office. Stef also highlights the diversity at the depot: “One moment you’re preparing offshore containers for departure, the next you’re working on warehouse planning, and then you’re preparing the depot for an upcoming storm to make sure everything is secured. In short: never a dull moment.”</p>
<h2>2. Creativity and technology come together</h2>
<p>Within Hacon, and especially at HCM, everything revolves around smart solutions. Jan, who started as a container mechanic and has been an account manager at Hacon Container Modifications for three years now, explains that there is hardly ever any standard work. That’s exactly what makes it interesting: “you are constantly improving, innovating, and developing custom solutions that are both practical and high-quality.”</p>
<p>This combination of creativity and technical expertise means you’re not just executing tasks, but truly contributing to the final product.</p>

<p class="p1">In some cases, it is definitely worthwhile to opt for a rejected container. After five years, shipping containers must be re-inspected every 30 months. If a container is rejected, it can often still be repaired. With the help of the specialists at Hacon Container Modifications, these containers can be repaired. They can then be reused for transport and will once again comply with the applicable certifications.</p>
<p class="p1">If a container can no longer be repaired, it is given the status BER (Beyond Economical Repair). A BER container may no longer be used for transport, but can still be used for other purposes.</p>

<p>The first step is, of course, the container itself. What exactly do you want to store? And will it remain just these goods, or will your stock grow soon? These are all questions that determine what size container you need.</p>
<p>The smallest (mini) storage container is 4ft. That is approximately 4,6 m3. Ideal for storing small materials and goods, such as (garden) tools, generators, lawnmowers, and computers. <p>He may have been a familiar face at Hacon Containers for decades, but from now on we can officially introduce Joeri Roos as the new director of Hacon Container Modifications. This 41-year-old technology enthusiast began his career at the age of 16 as an assistant mechanic in commercial construction. He preferred practice over theory and traded books for a welding machine. All of this has brought him to where he is today: director of Hacon Container Modifications. His secret? Swimming against the tide and doing things just a little differently. We interviewed Joeri about his career and future plans as the new director of HCM.</p>

<h2>Growth and change</h2>
<p>Joeri's adventure at Hacon Containers began in 2007 as a freelancer. He did some jobs for the special construction sector, but when the number of requests increased enormously, we were able to persuade Joeri to join Hacon. Since then, he has witnessed the growth and transformation of the company at close quarters. “We started out as a repair company for shipping companies, but now we are the leading specialist in container modifications,” explains Joeri. In 2022, it was even decided to make Hacon Container Modifications a separate branch of the company, with its own location and its own team of container specialists. This opened up various opportunities for the company to specialize even further in container modifications. And with success!</p>

<h2>The Swiss Army knives of the container world</h2>
<p>Joeri makes no secret of the fact that he has always followed his own path. “Books and textbooks? Not my thing,” Joeri admits. “I prefer to work with my hands. What my eyes used to see, my hands could make.” It's no surprise that Joeri still enjoys regularly walking around the workshop. It allows him to stay in touch with the practical side of the business. He is proud to see how his team, both in the office and in the workshop, has developed over the years. “We are now effectively a construction company,” explains Joeri. “Our shell is a container, but we do construction, carpentry, insulation, electrical work, and much more. We are like the Swiss Army knives of the container world; we have a solution for every problem!” </p>

<h2>Memorable projects</h2>
<p>Joeri describes the Hacon Container Modifications team as young and creative, full of passion and freedom to innovate. One of the highlights for Joeri and his team is a major project for a Mammoet crane. “HCM is an important supplier for the largest land crane in the world,” Joeri says proudly. “The counterweight section of the crane consists of specially built containers that we supplied.” This project was a huge learning curve for Joeri and also his first reason for a business trip to China. It was a project that certainly left him wanting more and one that the whole team worked on with great enthusiasm.</p>

<h2>Keep the (team)spirit high!</h2>
<p>Joeri sees teamwork as crucial to success. “Everyone feels responsible for a project, which creates a close-knit team,” he says. His biggest challenge in his new role as director is therefore to maintain this team spirit and ensure that everyone moves with the changes in the company. And those changes will continue to come, if Yuri has his way. “The upward trend in development, professionalization, and quality control makes HCM indestructible, and this is a trend I would like to continue.”</p>

<h2>What will the future bring?</h2>
<p>In his new role as director, Joeri wants to focus on transferring knowledge and inspiring people to pursue self-development. “I have always swum against the tide and want others to have the opportunity to look beyond their own limitations.” Joeri also wants to distance himself somewhat from the office and the workplace, because he has a team there that he has enormous confidence in. This gives Joeri the freedom to travel regularly to China, where he can discuss projects and develop business relationships. </p>

<p>And HCM isn't the only thing Joeri will be busy with in the coming months. On October 8, 2024, Joeri is getting married! “We've been together for two years now and are very happy together. Our mothers knew each other from prenatal yoga and lived in apartments next door to each other. However, we had never met before, so it feels like it was meant to be.”</p>

<p>The 20ft open side container is available in various versions. There is a drip tray container with three integrated drip trays and a liquid-tight steel floor, the extra-high 20ft high cube open side container, and, of course, the standard 20ft open side container. <h2>What are offshore containers?</h2>
<p>Of course, Hacon Containers is known for its containers, but as Erik points out: “I've been working with containers for years, but offshore is a whole different world. It makes it a lot more interesting and challenging. Especially with the internationalization of the offshore division within Hacon.”</p>
<p>There is no shortage of challenges. Offshore containers must meet very different requirements than normal containers. Simeon: “Of course, they are just containers, just like the other containers at Hacon. But they are a lot stronger, equipped with lifting eyes, and have various certifications.” But what are the biggest differences?</p>

<h2>The biggest differences between an offshore container and a normal container?</h2>
<p>Offshore containers must be built much more robustly than normal containers. For example, these containers have a steel floor and the metal is much stronger to withstand harsh conditions. In addition, the containers are often equipped with lifting eyes so that the container can be hoisted by a crane.</p>
<p>Because offshore containers are used in many extreme locations, they must have additional certifications, including DNV 2.7-1, EN 12079, ISO, and CSC.</p>
<p>Every year, a visual inspection is carried out by a certified company, and every four years, an MPI inspection is carried out, during which, among other things, the welds of the lifting points are checked for “leaks.”</p>

<h2>A day in the life of an offshore container specialist</h2>
<p>Simeon and Erik totally agree: no two days at Hacon are the same. Simeon: “After running this department on my own for four years, it became too much and I needed someone to help out. I travel more and more often and regularly visit trade fairs abroad, but the work in the Netherlands continued as usual.” Erik adds: “Now there are two of us, and we know that when one of us is traveling or attending a trade fair, the other will take care of the work at the office.”</p>
<p>The internationalization of Hacon's offshore division means that Erik and Simeon are both increasingly likely to be found at trade fairs around the world. A few days before this interview, Erik was in Düsseldorf, and Simeon has also visited various trade fairs in Europe, Asia, and the USA this year. Erik and Simeon can often be found at the office, but a week later, Simeon may be on a plane to visit a major customer abroad.</p>

<h2>Proud and modest: there is always room for improvement</h2>
<p>When you say ambitious, you say Simeon and Erik. They both strive for the highest possible standards and have already attracted some great clients as a result, but Simeon still finds it difficult to be proud: "I don't get proud very easily; there's always room for improvement. But if there's one thing I'm proud of, it's the growth of the offshore division within Hacon that I achieved in the four years before Erik joined and now with Erik on board. We now also have our own name: Hacon Offshore &amp; International."</p>
<p>Erik is also extremely proud to be part of Hacon Offshore &amp; International. “I am proud of what we have achieved together, and I am extremely proud and happy that I said yes six months ago when Simeon asked me to become part of Hacon Offshore &amp; International.”</p>
<h2>No shortage of wanderlust</h2>
<p>Of course, Simeon and Erik are not offshore container specialists all day long. Outside of work, they are involved in various non-container-related activities. But traveling? They love to do that, both for business and pleasure. Simeon: "I love traveling. Not only do I take advantage of opportunities to see the world through my work, but I also enjoy going on vacation with my wife in my private life. We have come through a difficult period, and thanks to the growth at Hacon Containers and Hacon Offshore &amp; International, I can now offer my family everything they need.</p>
<p>Like Simeon, Erik also enjoys traveling to different countries. He has been visiting Spain for years and it has become a favorite destination that he truly enjoys. But that doesn't mean he hasn't seen a lot of the world and still wants to see much more. Erik and his husband also enjoy eating out. Erik: “When you go out to eat with your partner, you have different conversations than you would on the couch. It keeps your relationship exciting and you can enjoy yourselves together.”</p>

<h2>The future of Hacon Offshore &amp; International</h2>
<p>What the future holds is not entirely in the hands of Simeon or Erik. But they certainly have ambition. Simeon explains: “In the beginning, it was mainly about sending. Showing your face a lot, but now more and more companies know and recognize you. We see this reflected in our growth, and we are doing everything we can to continue this growth.” Erik adds: “One of our last batches consisted of 20 offshore containers. These were sold before we even received them. This shows our customers' confidence in us and demonstrates that we are growing.”</p>
<p>Growth requires hard work, but at an employer such as Hacon Containers, it is fully facilitated. Both Erik and Simeon agree that Hacon Containers has an open working atmosphere where you are encouraged to be yourself. It doesn't matter how you do it, as long as the results are achieved. Erik explains: "Everyone is allowed to show their own strengths. Simeon and I are two completely different people, but this interaction works very well and Hacon supports this too." In addition to this positive working atmosphere, Hacon Containers also organizes various annual events for its staff, such as the annual family day and the Harbour Run.</p>

<p>At Hacon Container Modifications, we believe in craftsmanship, sustainability, and making the most of existing materials. Our refurbishment program is a perfect example of this. We started out refurbishing standard containers and small tanks, but now we also work on generators, flat racks, ISO tanks, cabinets, and even complete living containers. In short: if we can give it a new lease of life, we will.</p>

<h2>What does refurbishment entail at HCM?</h2>
<p>At HCM, refurbishment means that we turn old, used containers into neat and fully functional products. This extends the service life of these containers by often as much as 5 to 10 years. It is a sustainable solution that is not only good for the environment, but also for our customers' wallets. Containers do not have to be destroyed or replaced, but are made as good as new.</p>

<h2>From repair to complete upgrade</h2>
<p>The requests we receive vary greatly: from replacing a bar hatch to completely refurbishing a living container. Sometimes it's just a matter of spraying a container, sometimes it's the whole package. Refurbishment therefore encompasses a wide range of activities for us: welding, electrical engineering, interior work, woodworking, and, of course, preservation. We do this with a team of around 20 specialists, each with their own area of expertise: welders, sprayers, electricians, interior workers, and more. A real club of handymen.</p>

<h2>De kracht van samenwerking</h2>
<p>Een refurbishmentproject begint altijd met een grondige inspectie: wat is de staat van de container, wat zijn de wensen van de klant en wat is er technisch en esthetisch nodig om het product weer helemaal in orde te maken? We communiceren hier transparant over en stemmen alles vooraf af, inclusief foto's en prijsindicaties. Zodra alles duidelijk is, plannen we de werkzaamheden in en zorgen we ervoor dat alles soepel verloopt.</p>

<h2>The spray shed as the final piece</h2>
<p>Although refurbishment at HCM involves much more than just spray painting, the spray booth often plays an important role in the end result. Here, parts and entire containers are given a new coat of paint. This can be standard colors, but also specific company colors when, for example, an entire container fleet changes its corporate identity. Thanks to good preparation and an efficient working method, we can work quickly and neatly. And that is reflected in the result.</p>

<h2>Practical examples</h2>
<p>We are particularly proud of our larger projects, such as refurbishing entire living containers that are used worldwide as canteens, kitchens, changing rooms, or warehouses for groups of people. These projects bring together all of our areas of expertise: from construction and interior design to electrical work and finishing touches. We also provide added value for container fleets. While we spray them in a new color, we immediately carry out the necessary maintenance and make upgrades where possible. </p>

<h2>Sustainable into the future</h2>
<p>Refurbishment and sustainability in general are really important to us. By giving used containers a second life, we are actively contributing to a circular economy. We are therefore constantly looking at ways to make our processes more sustainable and improve them. This ensures that we can continue to refurbish containers in the future in a way that is consistent with the quality and responsibility we stand for. </p>
